The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council recognized the City of Bogo as this year’s Regional Gawad Kalasag awardee-an award given to performing LGUs in terms of DRRM (Disaster Risk Reduction Management) practices or significant contributions on policy.
The award was given to Bogo City for its Family DRRM under the I.MPrepared (Information Management in Preparation for Disaster) Program, a policy of which the City government developed as counter measure based on the lessons learned after Super typhoon Yolanda’s wrath on the North.
“Although RA 10121 Philippine DRRM Act of 2010 mandates preparedness down to the barangay level, Family DRRM of Bogo City was designed to encourage the basic unit of society which is the family, not to ultimately rely on the barangay or the LGU. This is our way of training and empowering the families in Bogo”, said Ben Frederick Rodriguez, City DRRM officer.
DILG has made an endorsement to have the Family DRRM replicated nationwide. The said program is also being endorsed to be replicated by all LGUs and in fact, considered as the main reference of DILG’s existing and ongoing program-Listong Pampamilya.
“No government is a superhero. That is why we need the community to participate. Any good government policy is useless without community participation”, explained by Atty. Carlo Martinez, the Mayor of Bogo City.
Mayor Martinez personally received the award during the National Disaster Reduction Culmination. Now in the City’s care is a plaque as most resilient LGU in the whole of Region 7 and a cheque amounting to 50,000 pesos.
