LOURDES PROFILE

THE CENTERPIECE of a tiny park in Lourdes is Rizal statue on top of a 15 foot-high monument. It (the statue) has changed color many times over the decades. Rizal had a bowler hat and is depicted in mid – stride.

During the 80’s Rizal stood above the “Parkians” – Bogo’s answer to the Hagibis, VST and the Bee Gees as they made music and drank gin in the dusk. As it got later, the haunting music of Don McLean and Cat Stevens (to name a few) sunder the nights. Many a child called learned his first guitar licks from those unheralded artists.

Back then, there was another stone statue of a little child on the landscape below. Maybe he was supposed to be an angel but he was not dressed at all. Children, always curious – would check him out and get their first anatomy lesson.

Rizal would not have minded. It is still education after all.
